are wagons/hatchbacks. Sorry guys, it’s the truth. They may be lifted a bit, but they are wagons/hatchbacks nonetheless. I know they are rarely our our preferred RWD (are any?) but everything is FWD or AWD these days.

Proof...here is a CX-7

Kinja'd!!!

Now tell me that this lowered CX-7 is not a wagon

Kinja'd!!!

Don’t worry I’ve got my flame suit on

Edit: CX-9 to CX-7, getting my models confused

I wish you could convince my wife of this. She wants to replace our car with a crossover sometime soon. I’ve tried recommending a few wagons, but she won’t have it.

Sigh.

I think we’re almost all on the same page here. I doubt you’ll need the flame suit.

In my definition, virtually every “crossover” is a wagon or a hatchback.

Some kind of meet in the middle, like the Dodge Durango (which also calls the Jeep Grand Cherokee into question..).

yup...i consider the outback a crossover too, especially the new one

just buy a crossover, then lower it one weekend when she’s away, voila ...wagon

This is technically a crossover too.

is the durango a unibody now? true about those though, i would tend to consider them an SUV more so than a CUV

My parents had a first-gen Durango, the state considered it a station wagon.

Yep, unibody, RWD, paddle shifters, loosely Mercedes-derived suspension. But some models have a low range and “almost” proper 4WD.

They drive and ride like a large car — same platform as the Grand Cherokee that did so well in the reviews.

I’m going to spin this a different way. They are

a) Raised wagons

b) Squished SUV’s with a much more pathetic drivetrain.

Seriously, try to tell me an Equinox is a raised wagon. It’s an SUV that got caught in a vice.

no, wagon. haha, aren’t you paying attention? a wagon is a lowered crossover, a crossover is a raised wagon. add a lift kit to an impreza and all of sudden it’s a crossover

i’ll give you that...some are raised wagons, others are squished SUVs. hate on the squished SUVs all you want, but the hate for the raised wagons is unwarranted in my opinion...i mean that lowered CX-9 looks pretty damn good

Outback FTW. +1 for lowering kit.

How about because what is lowered is actually a CX-7 not a CX-9?

Also I love the wife’s CX-9

the only difference between this

and this

are 3 clicks of a button. (and the wheels but thats not the point here)

haha...good catch, i changed it...same thing though

Kinja'd!!! MasterMario - Keeper of the V8s > OPPOsaurus WRX
02/23/2016 at 12:43

Kinja'd!!!1

that’s kind of my point...there is no difference between a wagon and a crossover besides ride height

Kinja'd!!! 64Mali > MasterMario - Keeper of the V8s
02/23/2016 at 12:47

Big difference, same styling. CX-9 is more luxury CX-7 is a bit more sporty.

Crossovers are wagons or hatchbacks but with added ride hight/weight/center of gravity/price and frequently body cladding.

Minivans are wagons or hatchbacks with a sliding door, added ride hight/weight/center of gravity.

Sedans are wagons or hatchbacks with a less practical trunk.

Liftback coupes are wagons or hatchbacks

Coupes with a trunk are wagons or hatchbacks with a less practical trunk.

You’re not wrong. After all a Suburban is just a wagon on a truck frame. However, The problem is that all of these whatever-mobiles ride too high because of ‘safety’ and ‘offroad capability’

I think it’s just because there was no classification in the system for “SUV” and they figured it was close enough. And that’s probably what they’ve been classifying them as since the Wagoneer. Sure it’s got a frame and 4wd, but many station wagons have had a frame, and Eagles and Subarus have had 4wd. The bureaucracies of the state don’t car for the nuances of the auto industry, and they don’t care what BMW calls their sedans.

I don’t see what the point is.

Either way you look at it, it’s a fail. You either take a perfectly good wagon and you raise it to make it handle like shit and get worse MPG, not to mention it just looks bad, OR you take a real offroading SUV and take out all the mechanical bits that make it an offroader and keep the ‘style’ while making it a FWD piece of crap.
